WHAT IS SCIATICA?

Sciatica refers to the condition of an individual in which the sciatic nerve is damaged, injured, or simply irritated. This large nerve is located at the lower back and runs down to the back of each leg. When something puts pressure on or injures the sciatic nerve, the lower back gets affected and you will feel pain spreading even to the legs, hips, and buttocks.

  • Pain from the lower back extending to only one leg
  • Pain that worsens as you sit down, cough, ot sne
  • Numbness, weakness, or tingling of the leg at times
  • Above symptoms that appear all of a sudden and last for days or weeks.

Up to 90% of people with sciatica recover even without surgery.

CAUSES:

Most individuals who experience sciatica are those that are between 30 and 50 years old. Pregnant women are more likely to develop the problem due to the pressure placed on the sciatic nerve by the growing baby and developing uterus. If one is suffering from herniated disc disease or degenerative spinal arthritis, this may also lead to sciatica.
