Pregnancy Related Back Pain

WHAT IS PREGNANCY RELATED BACK PAIN?

Pregnancy related back pain refers to the condition in which pregnant women, usually in the second half of pregnancy experience back pain due to the growing baby inside their womb. While this may bring tiredness, exhaustion, and inconvenience most of the time, the good news is it is normal and it means the baby is developing properly.

SYMPTOMS:

Pregnancy related back pain is very easy to distinguish because it often starts when the baby starts growing inside the womb — usually around the 18th week of pregnancy — and can be recognized by the tiredness or numbness around the hips, on the lower back, and the buttocks.

Meanwhile, if you feel sharp or shooting pain that begins at your back or buttocks and extends all the way towards your legs, you may be experiencing a condition known as sciatica.

While back pains due to pregnancy may often be troublesome, they are common and usually curable. However, they may last all the way until you give birth, and sometimes can be replaced by postpartum back pain.

CAUSES:

As the name suggests, pregnancy related back pain is due to the developing baby in your body. As the baby grows, more weight and pressure are being put at your lower back, thus causing mild back pain. Here are other reasons why you’re experiencing slight discomfort during pregnancy:

  • Weight gain
  • Posture changes
  • Hormone changes
  • Muscle separation
  • Physical and emotional stress
