WHAT IS HERNIATED DISC?
Herniated disc, also known as slipped or ruptured disc, is a condition in which the discs that cushion the bones (vertebrae) of our spine in the back swell or break open.
As all the bones in our spinal column are cushioned by discs, the condition can happen in any part of the spine. HOwever, most herniated disc cases involve the lower back (lumbar spine). There are rare cases when the neck (cervical spine) or the upper back (thoracic spine) is affected.
SYMPTOMS:
People with herniated disc may experience some or all of the following symptoms:
- Pain and numbness at one side of the body, normally extending to the arms, buttocks, legs, and ankle or foot
- Tingling sensation that begins in the buttocks and may extend to the thigh or ankle
- In some instances, low back pain may accompany that pain and numbness of the leg
- Severe muscle pain and spasms
- Pain that gets worse with specific actions such as standing, sitting, walking, or lying down.
It is important to note that the types of pain may vary from one individual to another, so it is best to observe the symptoms
CAUSES:
The typical cause of herniated disc is disc degeneration, or more commonly know as wear and tear.
As people grow older, the discs in the spine lose some of the fluid that makes them robust and flexible. When this happens, the discs’ outer layer may form tiny cracks and ruptures, through which the gel inside the discs may be forced out, causing the disc to swell or break open.
Another common cause of herniated disc is back injury, such as:
- Heavy pressure or sudden strain to the lower back.
- Sudden twisting movement
- Strong sneeze
- Regular physical activities that stress the lower back, including improper weight lifting habits and sports-related injuries.
