WHAT IS WHIPLASH?

Also known as neck strain or neck sprain, whiplash is an injury in the neck area in which intervertebral joints, discs, ligaments, and nerve roots may become damaged. Typically, one suffers from whiplash when he or she gets in a car or sports accident that caused a.sudden extension (backward movement) and then flexion (forward movement) of the neck.

SYMPTOMS:

It is important to note that symptoms of whiplash may be observed within 24 hours or more after the accident or injury. These include:

  • Pain and stiffness of the neck
  • Pain or numbness in the arm and/or hand
  • Pain in the shoulder or pain that can be felt between shoulder blades
  • Low back pain
  • Headaches
  • Dizziness
  • Difficulty concentrating or remembering
  • Irritability and fatigue
  • Sleep disturbances

CAUSES:

Whiplash is typically caused by any circumstance in which there is a sudden backward and/or forward jerking movement of the head, severely affecting the neck of an individual, such as car accidents and sports injuries.
