Spinal Osteoarthritis

WHAT IS SPINAL OSTEOARTHRITIS?

Spinal Osteoarthritis, also known as spondylosis, is a condition where the cartilage of the joints and the discs located in the lower back, as well as in the neck, are damaged or break down. Sometimes, it produces spikes that put significant pressure on the nerves of the spinal column, which cause noticeable pain at the back, and sometimes in the neck, arms, or legs.

SYMPTOMS:

People suffering from spinal osteoarthritis may experience the following symptoms:

  • Back pain
  • Stiffness in the neck
  • Weak or numb arms or legs, if the spinal cord has been affected
  • Back discomfort is temporarily relieved when you lie down

Depending on the severity of the condition, it may have little or significant interference in the patient’s daily routine. Additionally, aside from physical effects, spinal osteoarthritis may also trigger social and/or emotional problems such as depression or helplessness.

CAUSES:

Generally, spinal osteoarthritis is caused by old age and typically happens to older people. However, there are some younger individuals who can acquire this condition through one of the following causes:

  • Injury, trauma, or damage to a joint
  • Genetic defect of the cartilage
