Spinal Cord Injury

WHAT IS SPINAL CORD INJURY?

Spinal cord injury refers to the condition in which the nerves, bones, soft tissues, or vessels surrounding the spinal cord have been directly or indirectly damaged. This damage usually results to loss of mobility or sensitivity function of the spinal cord. For very severe damage, the ability of the brain to communicate with other parts of the body may be temporarily or permanently stopped.

SYMPTOMS:

Spinal cord injury can be distinguished by some or all of the following symptoms:

  • Loss of movement and sensation, as well as loss of ability to feel cold and heat
  • Loss of bladder or bowel control
  • Exaggerated or involuntary reflex activities
  • Spasms
  • Pain or intense stinging sensation
  • Difficulty in breathing and coughing
  • Changes in sexual function, sensitivity, as well as fertility

CAUSES:

Spinal cord injury may be caused by simple falls or severe accidents such as car crash and sports injuries. Diseases such as polio or spina bifida — a condition in which the brain or spinal cord has developed incompletely — can also result to this condition. Additionally, if an individual’s spine has weakened due to another condition, such as minor injuries and arthritis, this can cause spinal cord trauma, as well.
