Spinal Compression Fracture

WHAT IS SPINAL COMPRESSION FRACTURE?

Spinal compression fracture is a condition in which the bones of the spine (vertebrae) get damaged or collapse due to old age, poor posture, or injury. Soft and weak bones are the primary trigger of this problem.

When bones are weak and brittle, even normal day-to-day activities can eventually lead to spinal compression fractures. For example, lifting heavy objects or slipping on the floor can put the spinal bones at risk for damage.

SYMPTOMS:

People with spinal compression fracture may experience some or all of the following symptoms:

  • Sudden and severe back pain, especially in women nearing or over 50 years old
  • Gradual worsening of back pain
  • Pain that gets worse with specific actions such as standing, sitting, walking, bending, or twisting
  • Deformity or curving of spine, known as kyphosis
  • Loss of height
  • Back discomfort is temporarily relieved when you lie down

CAUSES:

The most common cause of spinal compression fracture is osteoporosis, a condition responsible for thinning of bone tissue and losing bone density. Osteoporosis typically affects older adults.

Other possible causes of spinal compression fractures include:

  • Physical injury or trauma to the back
  • Tumor that either starts at the spine or one that spreads to the spinal area
  • Infection of the vertebra known as osteomyelitis
  • Congenital disease such as osteogenesis imperfecta
